Great title. In fact one of the best things about the book....that seems cruel, but two days after finishing it, I can't recall much of the detail. Set in the town of the narrator's childhood, each chapter is the tale of another local character. They are intertwined in the kind of ways of small towns, and it was a quick but not memorable read. ...more

Hegi is brilliant. Characters so vivid. Germany after the war - palpable. What a spectacular story by a true talent!
