Not certain how to count reading this as I did so much skipping. It was hard to follow due to the style. The author did so much skipping between time that it was often hard to read. There would be a random sentence that told what someone did or became years later, or a jump backwards to give history. Once again, I am having trouble being on the same page as the Pulitzer Prize panel as to how winners are chosen.

If you have the patience to go past the initial pages, this novel will be so rewarding. Embedded with the life of of 19th century US South, it provides alternative insights into the slavery institution, but more important into the human nature.
