Why couldn't Sharon Kay Penman have been my history teacher? Her writing is spot on - and yes, there is a large cast of characters but this brings depth and breadth to a story that would otherwise have been difficult to tell. The founding of the Plantagenet dynasty and Maude's fight for the crown is powerful with plenty of twists and turns. So looking forward to the next book in the series.

Another brilliant novel by one of my favorite historical authors, Sharon Kay Penman. She breathes life into these historical people and sets the stage for a wonderful read. Being an English historian, the events and places are so familiar but her characters place me in the middle of everything. I can rejoice with the victories and feel the pain and sorrow of the defeats. I can hardly wait to read the next in the triology. Ok wow, not a stone unturned or an historical figure missed! Very well written, but don't get too attached to any one person because you never know if their story line will be picked back up again.
