Excellent series with a most unusual setting and cast of characters. Dr.Siri is the national coroner of Laos in the 1970's. Mysteries steeped in the chaos of the nascent communist state told thru the eyes of a party member smart enough to see through the rhetoric, but valuable enough for both his medical knowledge and propaganda value as a veteran freedom fighter to be allowed a bit of eccentricity. At this point (book seven) in the Dr. Siri Paiboun series, most readers will know what they're getting. The familiar cast of characters (Madame Daeng, Insp. Phosy, old comrade in arms Civili, Nurse Dtui, Judge Haeng, etc...), a gruesome crime (three women all dead via an unusual sword), encounters with spirits (both alcoholic and otherworldly) and a strong dose of period history.
