Total rot.
I finished it bc I had vague recollections of The Secret Life of Bees being a decent read. I must’ve either been too young to understand good books OR Sue used up all her writing prowess in novel #1 and was forced to spew out this Lifetime movie screenplay to keep some publishing company happy.

I love to read Sue Monk Kidd's writing, and this was a fast enjoyable read. The story has a hook within the first page which was a great start. I loved the setting, the revelation of the truths about past and the way that lore, mysticism, and religion was woven into the story. Holding the extra stars back because I thought that the love at first glance, rolling the hay (well sand) at second glance romance was a bit trite and diminishes the depth of the characters and the decisions they had to ma

60 pages in: The main character's problems aren't problematic enough for me to care and I can feel my apathy gradually morphing into rage. And so it returns to the shelf in the lobby.
