I didn't like the first story in this book of four - "1922" is about a man who kills his wife with his son as his accomplice, and is a 130-page exploration of guilt and its aftermath. A little too indulgent for me... but the other three stories were pretty good. There's the usual one about making a deal with the devil to prolong your life, one about rape, and one about 'a good marriage'. Nothing too original, but King manages to write in a compelling manner, and I love the little details he puts

Wow. This was DARK. The title is definitely an accurate description of these four short stories. These are stories of retribution for actions - wicked selfish actions - whether or not they were justifiable, retribution was made. These stories are disturbing as most of Stephen Kings works are - but they are not just to titillate the horror in you. They could very well be what your neighbor, son, husband, or self could come to if you allow the pride and selfishness to rule.

Disturbing because it's about everyday people!

As with most King's we have some tales well told that stand on their own and keep you riveted without the tricks of a Hollywood movie, but only the plausibility of...yes, that could happen....it could happen to me!
