What better book to read while on a trip to San Francisco than this one? A Crack in the Edge of the World tells the tale of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. The fires that started just shortly after the earthquake exacerbated the devastation the earthquake created. It took three days for the fires to be completely put out. By that time, all of Chinatown and much of San Francisco was in rubble and ashes.

Well-written account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the science behind it is somewhat awkwardly attached to a more recent account of Winchester’s travel across the North American plate from Iceland to San Francisco and Alaska. The history is meticulously researched, as usual, and the science is well explained.

Ahhh... Simon. I always learn something new from one of his books. Looking forward to reading all of them!

The title is somewhat misleading as the quake itself only accounts for about 150 pages out of nearly 400; unfortunately, it failed to sustain my interest as a result. Kind of a letdown compared to his other work.
