A really interesting look at very different young women of Latino background, similar in some ways, but very different in others, this book will pull you in and not let go until you find out what happens to each of them. The story spotlights a problem that occurs in many cultures, many countries, and with many people: clumping and lumping people together just because they seem to share a cultural background and/or racial origins. Five Hispanics become friends
in college, forming the sucias,
the dirty girls. I love all the
Hispanic culture, the Spanish
words and phrases, so much that
I can overlook the amazing way
that each of the five is from
a different Spanish subculture,
almost as if they were chosen
for a Census Bureau study, and
the happily-ever-after endings
that occur for each woman, even
the gay woman journalist, even
the battered wife, even the
girl dating the former drug dealer.

Fun for the beach only - one step more interesting than most chick lit, but only a small step. More like a 2.5, but the beach was really nice.

Your standard chick lit plot -- the wrong men, the wrong jobs, the wrong lives -- but Valdes-Rodriguez writes so well that this felt a step up from your normal airport chicklit novel. Great individual narrative voices and a really satisfying ending.
