Wow... okay, this book got darker and darker, and basically delivered a gut punch that left me reeling and feeling a little sick! BUT at the same time, it was beautifully written -- even as the characters did some extremely ugly things. Some of my overwhelmed-sick-gut-punch feelings might have to do with how I gulped down more than half the book in one sitting (but this also speaks to its addictive readability!). One of the most seductive, intoxicating books I have read in a very long time. The prose in this delicious novel is just superb. This is sophisticated story-telling with enough twists and turns to keep it exciting right to the end. Contrary to the opinion of some reviewers here, the tale is told with a sensitivity to the incredible longing of Ralph Truitt for the woman with whom he is falling in love. I am not even certain that this book could be rated ok. maybe the only reason that I did not rate one star is because I did actually finish the book. Not even really sure why I did that either because it was so predictable. I also caught myself skimming/skipping portions quite often. this occurred when Ralph was thinking or dreaming about his desires or when Catherine was in her fantasy land. maybe because of the skipping thing, I did not get a real handle on why so many people go off the deep e
