A hard book to read but perhaps that is what makes it good. Life is hard, especially for the initial settlers of Wisconsin who are battling weather, uncertainty and even their family. This is an intense story and not for the faint of heart. Life can be tough and brutal and it is all shown in Goolrick's novel.

One of the most seductive, intoxicating books I have read in a very long time. The prose in this delicious novel is just superb. This is sophisticated story-telling with enough twists and turns to keep it exciting right to the end. Contrary to the opinion of some reviewers here, the tale is told with a sensitivity to the incredible longing of Ralph Truitt for the woman with whom he is falling in love. Ralph Truitt put an add in the paper looking for a reliable wife. He decides to have Catherine Land become his wife but when she appears at the train station she is much more beautiful than her picture. Catherine has secret reasons for wanting to marry Ralph which are slowly revealed. The book jacket made this sound like a suspenseful mystery which it isn't. It's more of a depressing character study about 3 main characters. Not much action and some really dragging parts.

This book took some twists & turns. It was an enjoyable book with a strange premise (which I won't give away). The characters fluctuated between believable & beyond belief. As a reader your loyalties were often in flux. I would recommend this book to a mature reader.
