Linda Martin
Turner Buckminster was a minister's son. In 1912 his father got a job preaching in a small town, Phippsburg, Maine, so Turner had to leave Boston and his friends there. In Phippsburg the boys his age were obnoxious bullies toward him yet his father continually encouraged him to play baseball with them. He was miserable.

Turner isolated himself near the ocean where he met a black girl named Lizzie Bright Griffin. They became best friends and he was invited to visit her home on Malaga Island.
