What Members Thought
Bernie Gunther is a dummkopf, painfully slow on the uptake. So, since I like to be surprised or at least challenged by a thriller and since I found Kerr's evocation of 1936 Berlin both obvious and overdone, this only gets two stars from me and I'm being generous at that.

Set in Berlin of 1936, this wonderful mystery takes its title from the slang term used to pejoratively to describe those latecomers to Nazism who managed to rise quickly when the party gained power. The private detective is Bernie Gunther, an ex-cop of some renown who resigned rather than get caught up in the internal political tugs of war being waged by Goerring and the like.
