Clete discovers an illegitimate, bad ass daughter Gretchen - and she is a new character who works in well with the series. Kudos James Lee Burke.
This was weird, and unresolved, and sad; it was a really lovely installment in the Dave Robicheaux series, but in a very disconcerting sort of way.
The writing in these books combined with the narrative skills of Will Patton elevate this series into the upper echelon of crime fiction. The descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells allow you to feel like you’re living right in the moment along with the characters.
