I loved this at the beginning, but compared to other magical realism I've read by others, it was just meh. The characters just didn't flesh out for me beyond anything I could have predicted pretty early on. Much much fluffier than what I was looking for.

I finally did it.
I read a Sarah Addison Allen novel back in April after years of avoiding the author for fear her stuff would not be to my liking for the simple fact that everyone seems to love her. To be honest the only reason I read it was because it was a buddy read in my Goodreads group.

On the one hand, this was a lovely book. The writing was pretty. The pace kept you going and going. The magical elements were fantastic and wondrous. On the other hand, this book had problems. It was telling two stories--one which I liked, one which I was more ambivalent about--and they didn't overlap nearly as much as they ought to have. They both felt a little derivative, although I think I was a little more forgiving when it came to Julia's portion than with Emily's.

Emily moves to Mullaby, North Carolina to live with her grandfather after her mother dies. She finds out her grandfather is a giant and her mother is disliked by the Coffey family for actions she did in high school. My main problem with the book was that the secrets the characters were keeping were really obvious and the ending was totally predictable. Not a bad book just nowhere near as good as Garden Spells.
