This was brilliant. I enjoyed everything about this novel and only wish I had the next in the series with me. This is a YA novel and the first of a series of 6 books.
Without giving away much, it's a dystopian read about organ harvesting (well not organs, everything harvesting?) The whole concept is weird but interesting, and creepy but still interesting. Very well written, never a dull moment. Definitely look forward to reading more by Shusterman. ...more

Seriously. Does the star count mean "It made me think," "that was disturbing," or "I really liked it?"
This book was deeply disturbing. I couldn't get rid of it fast enough, but I felt like I needed to be able to discuss it with my kid who was reading it with her TAG group. I felt sick reading it. I am absolutely positive that the author had some agenda but I am not sure what it is. I considered the possibility that it was anti-abortion (which I already am), but I don't think it was that.

It is always interesting to read books which get the highest ratings on GR, and to figure out why:
1. mass appeal but nothing else to recommend them?
2. block voting by a particular kind of reader?
3. written about something that is a cult following or trendy at the moment?
4. a totally amazing book? -and always hoping for the last option, I start reading.

I haven't read a Neal Shusterman book/series I haven't enjoyed, and this one is no exception. Shusterman is one of my go to authors when someone needs a YA recommendation. His dystopian worlds are often all too relevant and reflective of our contemporary challenges and are great fodder for deep discussions. I'm reading this series with my 14-year-old. Two thumbs up!
