Kerman is a brave writer, letting the reader into the intricacies of her experience from the time of her crime & conviction, until she is released. It is easy to identify with her, and not only an insight into the experience of our criminal justice system but also a testimony to the resilience and shared humanity that comes out in times like these. A must read!!

I found this book riveting in a "there but for the grace of God go I" kind of way. Not because I've ever been involved in dealing drugs or anything illegal but I've done other foolish things and could see how a twist or turn in the road could have led me down the same path.

Love the show! Love the book! There are so many looks into a men's prison, this is a woman's perspective. She assists in smuggling drugs and gets caught a few years after the fact and has to do time. The people and situations she encounters are crazy ( and completely entertaining, shocking, scary, funny ( add adjective of choice here) not for the conservative person obviously. The show is on netflix, season 2 starts in June. Based on her true experiences. Awesome stories. Oh, and reminds me agai

I’m told the show, Orange is the New Black, is all sex. Thankfully there isn’t any in the book–it is mentioned but that’s it. The story of author Piper Kerman’s near-intentional self-destruction (can there be unintentional self-destruction?) highlights a problem among the prison population—risk-taking as a thrill, a high. I’m glad she grew up, if a little too late. She highlights a number of other very real problems faced by the prison population—lack of access to anything meaningful to do, too

This book was recommended to me by an attorney that was reading it. I hadn't watched the TV show so I wasn't influenced by that aspect at all. The concept of a well-educated Smith graduate becoming part of a drug ring was intriguing. Piper Kerman does a good job of telling her story & definitely gives the reader a lot to think about.

Disturbing and enlightening. I did not really understand that middle class white women could actually go to prison for these crimes in the real world. Piper's experience matured her and taught her a great deal about life on the "other side" of the law. It is an engrossing book.
