I'm still amazed by the lack of recognition that Selby receives in literary circles. His writing is certainly unconventional and oftentimes graphic, but his insight regarding the human psyche and suffering in unparalleled. In this novel, Selby gives us characters that are anything but lovable, yet treats them with such sympathy that we can't help but root for them.
