Short story collection about contemporary Native American experience. Smoke Signals was based on this book. I haven't read anything quite like Sherman Alexie before... dark comedy, difficult topics (poverty, alcoholism, violence, racism, etc) with quite a bit of basketball for good measure!
These were the stand-out stories for me - I really loved Thomas Build-the-fire stories and those about family overall:
Because My Father Always Said He Was The Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play 'The Star-S ...more

I can sit and read this book straight through. I never knew about life on the reservation until I picked up this book. Unfortunately I have not liked his other books as much as this one. The stories are real. I found myself shivering more than once at the plight of these people. How sad and hopeless they might appear to be and the many ways they find to have hope. It was brilliantly adapted by Alexie into the movie Smoke Signals.
