Kat (A Journey In Reading)
I have been reading more young adult books lately, as sort of my quick enjoyment during the semesters of grad school.

Rose and Lissa have been friends all of their lives. Their bond of friendship takes on new meaning after an accident that takes Lissa's family.

Lissa is a member of a Royal family and Rose is her guardian. Being a guardian is tremendous responsibility for a 17 yr old, but Rose grows into the role with a new understanding of what it takes. Lissa is trying to live up to the expectat

from the NPR poll of best young adult fiction

Okay FINE. I have resisted every single recommendation of Richelle Mead that I've ever seen, because it just looks like so much teeny bopper fantasizing fluff. I tend to HATE books that involve the word "dhampire." It's just ... so much nauseating Mary Suing (oh I'd love to be a sexy vampire, but not with all the downsides - I know! dhampire!") But I keep seeing it listed. And yes I like vampires. And I like fluff, too. So that's it, I'm done resisti

Mean girls with vampires!

Having started the Bloodlines series, I decided to go back and read the Vampire Academy books so I could better understand what was happening. As it turns out, both Sage and Rose repeatedly make dumb decisions despite being touted as fiesty heroines and skilled fighters.

This was a quick, one-day, fun book filled with high school betrayals and blood sucking. Woohoo!

Oh wow! I have never been so impressed by a vampire book. I was originally put off, because there are so many books about vampires, that most of them are unoriginal and dull. But this book was great! The world created was completely novel, and teh politics of Strigoi, Moroi and Dhampires are fascinating. The story is also very exciting. I could not put the book down in the last half. I loved also that even though it is mostly told in first person, every now and again, the perspective is shifted ...more

This book was a freebie in a goodie bag. I only started it because it fit a reading challenge, but I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely YA and full of the angst/bitchiness/gossip/parasuicide attempts/crushes and teenage sexuality that you'd expect in a caricature of a YA novel, but a fun read. The heroine (Rose) is a strong character, but the vampire princess she exists to defend is definitely a wet noodle. (thanks to another reviewer for that phrase, it's perfect). If it wasn't for their magi ...more

A little light on plot but not bad.

I am embarrassed to say I liked this book. Yes, it was incredibly teen-ish, but it had a few redeeming qualities. It created a nice fictional world and it was interesting to see the rules of this particular vampire world unfold.
