Dave & Molly Robicheaux with Clete in tow go on an extended vacation in the Montana wilderness - and, of course, end up assisting with a murder investigation with all the usual violence, mayhem, and life-threatening events. This predicable, plot scenario is one often found in a long-standing mystery series for both books and TV shows - the vacation mystery adventure. Kudos to Burke as he made this one work.

I've said it before but it bears repeating: NOBODY writes like James Lee Burke. This novel finds Dave and Clete in Montana instead of Louisiana. The plot is filled with twists, turns and Burke's usual cast of astonishing characters. But, though the plot is great, it is Burke's on-going creation of the tormented Dave Robicheaux that fascinates. Wonderful story --- not quite as compelling as "Jolie Blon's Bounce" but not much is.

I always enjoy this series but this one was especially enjoyable to me because it was set in Montana in an area with which I am extremely familiar. It was fun watching the characters traverse roads and go places where I have actually been. I usually listen to this series and I found I had Will Patton's voice in my head for the entire reading, which is not a bad thing.

This didn't move as well -- or feel nearly as compelling -- as Tin Roof Blowdown, but the ending was really well-handled and I always find the books that are heavy on Clete to be interesting if not compelling.
