I love this book! Witty, sarcastic, but thought provoking- a rare gem especially in YA area. Also, this is the first book I've read witha Native American narrator. I've read this for banned books week but true, you should rread it anytime! ...more

Everybody on the rez calls me a retard about twice a day. They call me retard when they are pantsing me or stuffing my head in the toilet or just smacking me upside the head.

I’m not even writing down this story the way I actually talk, because I’d have to fill it with stutters and lisps, and then you’d be wondering why you’re reading a story written by such a retard.

I wanted this book to be better than it was. Some of the themes were just too in-your-face - I found it hard to believe that the nerdy Indian protagonist could (view spoiler) within a few months of his entry into the 'white' high school. The illustrations are good though, and the story is quite engaging. I can see the 10-14 group really liking it and learning good things from reading it. ...more

I enjoyed this book. It is not quite a typical YA story. It was about a native american boy, but I feel like just about anyone can relate to it. It is very sad, but the voice that tells it makes it more ok. It is about a boy who decides to go to a school off of the reservations, and the ramifications that the decision has on his life and his community.

A good friend of mine died of complications from hydrocephalus, so I appreciated this book's drawing more awareness to that condition.

Contains bullying, racism, alcoholism and abuse, masturbation.

No rating because I didn't get deep enough into it.

A great insight into a little spoken about and oft forgotten part of Americana. I think anyone would have a lot to learn from this story.
