The story of Alice Howland who at age fifty is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers disease. Alice is a professor at Harvard in linguistics when she recieves the news. It was interesting reading a book written solely from the point of view of someone with Alzheimers. I think Lisa Genova does a good job of letting the reader experience Alice's confusion from the disease. The only problem I have with the book is that it made me really depressed. Alice wonders, am I just stressed, over tired, menopausal...or do I have more serious issues. When Alice is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, we see and feel her distress and confusion and determination. An excellent book; but it makes one evaluate our own forgetful episodes more carefully.

I liked the perspective that the author chose to tell this story. I can recognize the difficulties she had with her memory as something one of my family members went through in the initial stages of recovering from a mTBI. In our situation, improvement was achieved. And it made me that much sadder about the main character suffering losses that would continue and would not improve. This is my second book by Lisa. I loved Left Neglected so much. I tell everyone to read it as it helped me cope with my traumatic accident in my early thirties.
Still Alice is one of her earlier books. I feel it is powerful for those that have been affected by a health scare early in their life or someone close to them. I loved this book. It was told from the perspective of the one suffering from Alzheimer's. It gives a great understanding of what it does to a person,their feelings.
