Gripping, fast-paced legal thriller which had me racing through the last chapters. Landay achieves a perfect balance between courtroom drama and family tragedy, adopting a crisp style for the former while taking his time to delve into the emotional turmoil of the Barber family. As a result he had me rooting for the accused Jacob, largely to put an end to his parents' anguish. Loved it.

Horribly depressing, incredibly sad. What a waste of reading time. I thought this was going to be the page turner of the summer. Instead it was just 400 pages of lives destroyed.
Nov 1 2023 Reread it for bookclub. Did not have the overwhelming negative opinion I had the first time. I think it will make for an interesting discussion.
