This is one of the best books I have read all summer. I started it and could not put it down. It is about a young woman who has just discovered that the man who supposedly murdered her father years ago was just let out of prison - decades earlier than he should have been. Now he is coming back to town to get revenge on her family. Interesting, complex characters in a rural Kansas setting. How families get along (or not).

Pickard's strength here is her plainspoken writing style, which aligns perfectly with her cast of small-town Kansas ranchers. The mystery's fairly good as well - she manages to clue you in enough but still leave a final twist or two to surprise you in the end.
