Made a long drive go by in a flash...but left me with a painful bellyache (from laughing too hard and too long) on arrival.
Growing up in the 70's, much of what Bill is describing was already gone before I was big enough to realize what was missed, but it is still close enough that I can relate and also miss the America, where the cities are each unique, the people nice, and there are adventures to be found in any direction, even when everything is all the same.
A very enjoyable read. ...more

Another Bryson book that was quite enjoyable, though it's not one of my favorites. It painted a rather hilarious and interesting picture of growing up in the 1950s in the Midwest, as only Bryson can do.

I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. It was fairly good. I didn't find it as nostalgic of the '50s as it purports to be. Bryson is a witty writer, but in this book perhaps uses exaggeration a little too much, leaving details, and hence the whole of his memoir, a little unbelievable.

An account of Bill bryson's childhood in Des Moines, Iowa. I found parts of the book amusing. Other parts of it read like some strange history book citing odd facts about the 50's. An okay read but nothing overly memorable.

This is the funniest freaking book I've ever read.
