I'm wavering between four and five stars. This is a vivid retelling of the Iliad. The familiar plot is streamlined and made newly engaging. I felt some parts of the plot were oversimplified but that's normal for this type of book I think.

4.5 stars.
This is a deeply moving tale of love, war, honor, fate, and sacrifice. It’s heartbreaking and beautifully told, and is now a clear favorite of all the Greek myth retellings (including Circe and A Thousand Ships) I’ve read.

More than 5 stars. Beautiful.

My second audio book by this author, it may be timing, but this book was an unexpected and epic story of love. The great warrior Achilles, his a incredible journey from boy to man with treasured Petrocolus at his side. I found myself rooting for them even though prophecies tend to give away the ending. :) I’ve never enjoyed Greek mythology until now. And the narration - perfection.

This is a wonderful book. The story of Achilles was familiar to me from classic literature, but not so much the story of Patroclus, and this telling is beautiful and rich and imaginative. Even knowing where it was going, how it would end, I kept hoping for it to be different.
