Like the first book in the Alex Morrow series, this Glasgow-set psychological crime novel / police procedural starts with a home invasion that may or may not be a case of mistaken identity. The brutal murder that unfolds becomes the central storyline for DS Alex Morrow, whom we find some five months pregnant and soon to go on maternity leave.

This definitely shifts away from the Gothic feel that infuses much of Mina's other work to more of a straight police procedural, which I think works here. She retains her interest in exploring ideas of moral ambiguity, and her ability to provoke the reader's sympathy for those who commit unsympathetic acts is impressive.
