I've had this children's classic book on my shelf since I was a kid myself but I have never read it until now. I wish that I had!
Sewell imparts worldly wisdom upon her young readers through the experiences of the titular narrator, a horse named Black Beauty. The horse's experiences and life lessons learned along the way teach humanity and kindness towards all.

Well, this was an unexpectedly melancholy read. It starts out as something that seemed to me to be an allegory for human enslavement. The horse, talking in the first person singular, tells of being bought and sold, broken in, put to work, whipped, and he is at first called 'Darkie'. The novel was published in 1877, after the Civil War in the United States of America, so I'm not sure how close to the mark I am with my surmises.
