I am actually a bit suprised at how much I liked this book. I am not a huge horror writer fan. And I have to admit I liked Will Smith's movie quite a bit to the point where I can say I almost liked it more than the book. And to Matheson's credit he does a good job explaining why they hate sunlight, fear the cross, and can't look into mirrors. OK, I don't care for vampire books. Never have gotten into them. But this was an incredible story! We have the movie coming on our Netflix in a few weeks so I wanted to read the book first. It tells the story of a man who is the only person immune to a disease that turns its victims into vampires and kills them (so you do end up having both dead and living vampires about), and how he adapts, how he survives. The short story selections for this are great - you can really see the genesis of modern horror themes (some of which have since become cliches) in them. The title novella is also deeply stirring and scary, particularly when you imagine yourself in Neville's shoes. An unusual choice for me, but worth the stretch.
