I struggled with whether to give the 3 ⭐️ or 4. I guess, really, it’s 3.5 ⭐️ for me.
I liked the history and the vivid depiction of time and place. I had a very clear picture in my head of the monastery and the monks.
It took me until about 1/3 of the way in to feel all that engaged with the plot, but once I finally was engaged, the rest of the story sped by.
I think my main challenge was the character of Shardlake himself. He was arrogant and self righteous and self pitying. Thankfully, he begin ...more
