I do like a solid mystery series set in somewhere far off the beaten track, and since Alaska is the only state I've never been to, I was eager to check out this first entry in a 20+ book series featuring an Aleut private eye living in her cabin on a fictional national park about 200-250 miles east of Anchorage. I'd heard such good things about this series, but have to say I was disappointed with the first installment. I usually can keep up with intricate plots and lots of characters, but I was overwhelmed with all the characters introduced in this novel. I had to flip back several times to recall who someone was and how they fit in the story. And speaking of the story, there wasn't much to it. Kate Shugak goes and talks to a few poeple and figures it all out 'just like that.'

I really enjoyed this first book in the Kate Shugak Mystery series. I love the setting and I love how the stories don't unfold prematurely. I'll definately be read ing more in this series. ...more
