Major misfire. I wouldn't be surprised if this book sunk his Nobel hopes. It's actually pretty good for well over half the book, but then the wheels came off. It's like he was trying achieve a page count and went all Stephen King with the padding. I may write something later, maybe not. I've spent enough time with it, that's for sure.

This story wrapped up as just another extremely sappy romance. I expected more from the fantasy part of the novel, and I didn't feel that satisfaction when I finished reading. Still, I would have given this book 3.5 stars (maybe even 4) if I was able to because I enjoyed reading Marukami. His world of fantasy is different from any dystopia I've ever read, and it was an easy page-turner despite the length.

This was not Murakami's best effort. For some reason, more than other Murakami's works, there seemed to be a lot of repetition and needless recounting of the same story and plot points, over and over again. The length needed to be closer to "Air Chrysalis" the fictional novella referenced throughout. All the Murakami motifs are present for fans -- cats, crows, stairwells to alternate worlds.
