The mark of great fiction writing for me is the ability to capture a moment in time and make it feel utterly real, and Fitzgerald managed it perfectly here. He depicted the underbelly of America's most hedonistic era in a way that, more than anything, is utterly necessary. Deserving of its reputation.

Chosen for my reading group. I found it far too artistic, a triumph of style over substance but eventually it unveiled itself as a moral tale, criticising society of the time and still significant in today's "celeb" culture.
