This is a beautiful story of artist and combat war veteran Tom Birkin who is trying to survive the after-war of WWI. He is hired to restore a church mural in a small village in 1920 England. The story is about all he encounters in this one month, particularly those who are dealing with the war and dealing with life in general. A lovely book, that I could have read in one sitting, if I hadn't started late at night. I have found many books published by NYRB Classics that are truly wonderful, and this is one of them.
