Semi autobiographical account of Bulgakov's experience as a young doctor thrown in the deep end at a small hospital in a remote country town. His descriptions of the doubt arising from his inexperience and his growth in confidence and knowledge as he faces his fear is easy to identify with. The second story morphine of another doctors battle with morph one addiction, is fascinating due to Bulgakov's own addiction early in his career.
