Scandinavian mysteries have a rep for being dark and depressing, and this one certainly strives to earn that reputation, particularly for Wallander fans. The closing scene is heart-wrenching in a spare and simple way.

I like the Kurt Wallander series, and in this one, there are more insights into his own character and future than in most of the others in the series. He is on leave and then on holiday from his policeman job, and is asked to investigate two disappearances, those of the parents of the man to whom Kurt's daughter has just had a baby. Things are very complicated and not at all what they seem as he starts to delve into the background of the people involved. (view spoiler)

The final Wallander from Mankell.. and I'm sad this great detective's career is over. I've loved Wallander for years and Mankell is a master murder mystery storyteller. I'll miss him but a fitting final story for the first and best Swedish detective. If you love murder mysteries you will love Mankell... and learn about Sweden in the process.

Last in the Kurt Wallander series. Mankell not only writes a mystery for his inspector to solve, he also provides a pragmatic social commentary about the state of his country in the post-Cold War world.
