I first read this book over ten years ago and it was an odd reversion back to my divorce days. Herzog's seemingly artificial grasp on reality in personal relationships seemed even more real as I reflected back on my prior self. The mastery of Bellow was to capture the male mind as it seeks to be grounded within society and family.

After having just completed Joseph Anton: A Memoir I was intrigued that this book was one of the few books Rushdie mentions reading and re-reading in his memoir. Herzo
