Yes, definitely one of the worse books I've read. The author was annoying in his use of voice and point-of-view. Better narration would've made a difference. About a third of the book was a complete waste of time and should have been deleted. Plus, casting yourself as the main character is egocentric and annoying.

This is such a clever book that - for all my Anthro friends in particular - is a must read. It was at once engaging and humorous and tragic. It was also quite well researched (though some of the sources and anthropological perspectives/insights are a bit dated) and many of the characters' sentiments on wandering, on fieldwork, on living abroad, etc will be relatable.
