What Members Thought

It took me well over the first 100 pages to suspend disbelief, but once into the lapinomorphic view of the world, I began to see just how well this book is crafted. The characters are well thought out, the story/allegory can be enjoyed on more than one level, even the classical references at the beginning of each chapter are well fitted. No cutesy bunny rabbits here (well, maybe a couple) but a thoroughly believable tale of some rabbits and what they endure in search of their new home.

I vaguely recognized the title Watership Down, but was completely unfamiliar with it otherwise. It is a clever and well-written story for older children. It follows the adventures of some rabbits who leave their Warren and travel far and experience many hardships and joys. The rabbits have a simple language and only move as real rabbits, but of course are much brighter. I can see why Watership Down is such a beloved part of children’s literature!
