This was supremely enjoyable. I think that there's a corner of most of our hearts that is fond is the swashbuckling pirate image -- hard-drinking, hardscrabble men following their own rules and no others. What was interesting to me about this book was how surprisingly close that was to reality. Given the description of life in the British navy and merchant marine at the time, I too might have turned pirate -- when being a pirate is straight-up more pleasant than being a law-abiding mariner, wher ...more
