Every day I looked forward to settling in with this book before bed. The story chronicles 3 generations of a Tamil Brahmin family making its way in an increasingly modernizing society before India's independence. Besides the incredible story line, is the experience of learning about the traditions and customs of the Brahmin.

It was a little bit confusing because there were so many characters and names to remember but I liked the story.
A capitvating look at changing culture and customs in British India. The characters were as compelling as the anthropology -- not an easy task! I loved the vivid details of daily life and cultural practices.
