As with other Fandorin books, this book was enjoyable and well written. I liked the premise and the puzzle the initial crime presented, as well as the characters and the multiple points of view used in the narrative. But, about halfway into the book the rythm of the narrative started to feel too slow and contrived. It was still a fun read, but it was not as tight and enthralling as the two previous books in the series (The Winter Queen and The Turkish Gambit).

The multiple viewpoints shed new light on Fandorin by allowing us to see him through other eyes, and the Japanese passenger is especially note-perfect.
