This novel starts slowly but builds tension as we learn more about the characters and their motives. The key figure is the archaeologist, Somerville, whose devotion to uncovering ancient civilizations may fatally blind him to the complexities of his present, spring of 1914 in the teetering Ottoman Empire. Enter a spying oil geologist, a couple of counterspies and a full complement of fascinating characters. Truly an astounding ending as well.
