What Members Thought
The pace was plodding, but what dished it altogether were various solecisms, such as confusing high tea for afternoon tea and basic errors of grammar in a public school, Cambridge scholar. I was affronted one too many times, with most of the book left to go.
Way too Hemingway-esque for my liking.
Sansom does an excellent job here of capturing the feelings of dislocation and loss of identity that emerge from war and the constant upheaval conflict imposes even on those who try to dissociate themselves from it.
Set at the beginning of WW2 just after the end of the Spanish Civil War. A slow start to this book but it picks up in the middle and then zooms along at the end. Great characters that you really care about.
