In the end I'm wavering between two and three stars for this. I really, really did not like it, but some of my friends loved it, so I'm kind of confused. To me, the narrator was childish and arrogant and he does not grow mentally or emotionally over the long, long course of the novel. He's insufferable from page one until the end. I'm not quite sure how to rate this. Grossman is a very good writer and the entire book was interesting in different ways. It's a 400 page book. The first half is similar (but not quite) to an adult version of Harry Potter. At exactly page 201 the 'story' finally starts, but by then every character is drunk and annoying. Second half of the book is like an adult version of a very weird Narnia. And by the end of the book I still dislike the main character.

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite different from what I had anticipated and I found the pacing to be somewhat unconvetional but overall I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure I would have been satisfied if it was intended to be a standalone story. Knowing there was a sequel made reading it a different experience than it would have been otherwise.
