I really, really wanted to like this book - it was a gift from Jenn, and the last book she bought me that was far outside of my usual interests was the Golem and the Jinni, which I loved. However... this was long, and the characters and story weren't great, and there was some insipid maleness in it that was icky. So sad to give it such a low rating, but I really didn't like it and probably wouldn't have finished it in other circumstances.

I only got to the point when Quentin starts settling into school. That was enough dreck for me. I wanted to love this book so much--Harry Potter for grown-ups? Yes, please, sign me up! This is such a poorly written work though. Maybe if I continued to power through, I'd become so enchanted by the plot that I wouldn't care? But.I.Could.Not.Do.It.
