What Members Thought
This is a tragic and dramatic story of life in Nebraska. Alexandra Bergson is a Swedish-American immigrant who inherits the family farm because her father decided she was the only one of his four children with the qualities needed to manage the farm properly. She does a wonderful job of farm management but her personal relationships suffer. At age 40 she is still unmarried but she writes to her dear childhood friend, Carl, whose family moved away for economic reasons when he was a teenager.

My Interest
I loved both My Antonia and The Professor's House so it was a given that I'd read more by Willa Cather. The Professor's House also has the distinction of being the most quoted book in my Commonplace Book.

We come and go, but the land is always here.
A simple pastoral tale following the lives of settlers on the often hostile Nebraska plains with underlying themes of feminism and female emancipation. Cather's writing is at its best when she's meditating on the land, and there's no shortage of that here. Windswept and interesting.

One of those books I've always meant to read and I finally have. And I'm glad I did.
