Beautifully written (and well-translated from the French version) story of two families in France from the beginning of WWI to the middle of WWII. Would have liked a bit more detail on certain happenings, but the story leaves the reader with a feeling of hope.

An intimate and closely focused story, and all the more compelling for it - when writing in and about troubled times, focusing on the impacts at that very micro level sends the tragic message home in a way that a broader scope never can. Also, it makes Nemirovsky's glimpses of hope and love all that much more poignant. ...more
