The four discrete incidents related in this novel didn't form a cohesive whole. It was agenda-driven to highlight technology and a particular historic event wrapped up with a hasty sea-battle, so it was interesting and a decent read, but no more.

I enjoyed this novel much more than Hornblower and the Hotspur. I'm reading this series in the chronological order, though now I need to backtrack and read the "Crisis" half-novel.
This book returns to the author's earlier writing style which is more conversational than Hotspur was. However I'm still reeling from the last few words in the book. Was that meant as a cliffhanger to get people to buy the next novel?
