Rabbit is one of the most reprehensible characters in literature. Updike is a great writer, and knew what he was doing when he created this jerk. So just what was Updike up to? I'm not totally sure, since I'm still chewing over this. I've seen a lot of comments about Rabbit being some sort of Everyman. I don't see that at all. This guy is as worthless as it gets. This was my first John Updike novel, I believe, though I've read some of his short stories and used to teach them university students in China. This is the first of a series of books that Updike wrote about Harry Angstrom, whose nickname is Rabbit (from his fast-paced basketball days). I appreciate, and in fact, enjoyed the slice of life nature of the way this book is written. It offers a fly on the wall insight into an era. But Rabbit Angstrom is one of the most unsympathetic characters I've ever encountered. Yes because he's misogynistic, but mostly because seems to have no clear desires or goals, even if simple ones. He also seems to have no friends.
